Redeemer Update

Friends of Redeemer,

Here’s a brief schedule update; more details will follow shortly. Please contact me if you have any questions. Redeemer will begin meeting for weekly worship June 22 and we will be referring to these services as “Exploratory Worship” throughout the summer. We will plan on “officially launching” in early Fall. We are pursuing a lease arrangement with the Latvian Lutheran Church at 33rd & C. If we work out a deal it will provide the space we need for worship and kids ministry. The plan would be to hold a Sunday evening service.

*Weekly Prayer:*
Redeemer will be meeting for weekly prayer on Wednesdays, from 12:00pm to 12:30pm, at our property at 8th & D. The prayer time will start this Wednesday and run through the end of August. Please join us each week, or as you are able. It is very important for us to pray together.

*Exploratory Worship Services:*
The last three Exploratory Worship Services, prior to our weekly services, will be held May 25, June 8, and June 22. Each service will be at Zion Church, Sunday evening, 5pm. Nursery for newborn through 3’s will be provided. No children’s church or Sunday school yet (these will begin when we start meeting weekly). THE CHURCH PLANT AFC WILL NOT MEET ON THESE
SUNDAYS.

*Ordination Service for Steve Allen:*
Redeemer will be hosting the Ordination Service for our new RUF Campus minister Steve Allen, June 1 at Zion Church. The service will begin at 5pm. Please put this on your calendar and plan on attending.

Thanks.

Copy Machine for Sunday School and Awana

Sunday School teachers and Awana workers:  we now have a copy machine in the supply room.  In fact, we now have a supply room.  It’s where the crib room was during the nursery remodel.  And now that it is a supply room, thanks to Leah Noel and Jill Greff, it is well-stocked and well-organized.  Check it out.

Rummage Sale May 9th and 10th

Does this beautiful weather just make you want to clean out the closet, basement, and garage? Well, this is the week to load up the van or pickup, and bring your items to ZION, for the Peru Trip Rummage Sale. We will be collecting items on Wednesday evening (AWANA night) and Thursday evening, beginning at 6 PM. We do have a small storage room set aside at the church this week, if you want to bring in your items during church office hours. (Call the church to make arrangements.)

If you are available to help with sorting this Wednesday or Thursday evening (anytime between 6-9 PM), or Friday (between 7:30 AM and 5 PM) or Saturday (7:30 AM to 2 PM) during the sale, we would greatly appreciate it! It’s a wonderful time to visit with each other, work together, and meet people in this new neighborhood. Consider joining us because it is a great opportunity.

It would be helpful to know if you are bringing things or available to help. Call or email Marilyn Borchert (488-0190) or Leia Noel (435-0857). Thank you.

Building Purchase Update

Dear Zion,

I wanted to give you an update on our purchase of the Church Building at 5511 South 27th street. We were scheduled to close sometime last week, but the title search revealed a contractor’s lien against Southwood Lutheran. This should be cleared this week and we will close as soon as that happens.

Southwood Lutheran Church met as a congregation and overwhelmingly approved our purchase of their building. MiddleCross (the tenants at SLC) also voted unanimously to forfeit their first option to purchase the property. All parties are ready to close.

I know that both churches are praying for us, and again we are blessed by God and by his people in other congregations. Be encouraged, and continue to pray for these congregations and for the spreading of the Gospel throughout Lincoln and beyond.

In Christ,
Dennis Mann

Fall Fest this Sunday, October 7th at the Kerns’ acreage from 4:00 to 8:00.  In the event of rain, we will postpone for one week until October 14th.  Parking this year will be more difficult, since the nearby field we have used for parking in previous years has not been havested.  So if you can, share a ride with someone to reduce the number of cars.

Purchase Approved

Dear Zion Family,

Following months of examination and prayer for God’s guidance, the congregation approved a recommendation to purchase the former Southwood Lutheran facility at 5511 S. 27th Street.  We believe that this purchase will allow Zion to continue to proclaim the transformational power of God’s grace as well as fulfill our mission to be a resource church for Lincoln and the greater Kingdom of God—pouring ourselves out for others.

We have not abandoned the 9th and D neighborhood.  Our mission there has simply changed.  Rather than being the location of the mother/resource church, 9th and D will be the location of the next daughter church of Zion.  As a resource/mothering church, we will have an opportunity from our new location to support, equip, and commission church planting efforts—the first of which will be headed by Pastors Tobey Brockman and Adam Odell back to the 9th and D neighborhood.

We hope to finalize the purchase of 5511 S. 27th by October 1, 2007.  However, the church is obligated to honor an existing lease to MiddleCross Church until March of 2008.  We will be working with MiddleCross Church—who is currently renting the facility—on a transition plan.  MiddleCross has been very gracious during this period of decision, allowing us access into the facility for inspection on many occasions and praying for us.  Please pray for their future as well.  We are pleased to be partners in the gospel with MiddleCross and other gospel-preaching churches.

As time progresses there will be some improvement projects at 5511 S. 27th.  Stay tuned for opportunities to spruce up the grounds and facility.

Please continue to pray that we would be a grateful, Kingdom-minded, gospel-living people.  The facility is a helpful tool in ministry, but people are always God’s primary tool.

Yours in Christ,

Stu Kerns
Senior Pastor

“Gospel Christianity” Study

Tonight, September 19, pastor Tobey will be starting a new Bible study titled “Gospel Christianity”.

The word “gospel” occurs so often in the New Testament that it is clearly a summary term for the basic core of what Christianity is all about. But what is that core? We will explore that question and the implications the answer has to our lives, to our church, and to our city.

We will meet Wednesday evenings at the AFC buiding (AFC2) from 7pm - 8pm. The study will be held during Zion’s AWANA so if you have kids you can drop them off by 6:45pm at Grace Lutheran and head over to the AFC building at 8th & D street. We will make sure we are done promptly by 8pm each week so those of you with children can pick up your kids when they finish up AWANA at 8:15pm.

Everyone is welcome to participate. This will be a great opportunity for us to study, pray, talk, challenge, and relate together. So, please come and bring a friend.

Details:
Study: Gospel Christianity
Place: AFC building at 8th & D street (AFC2)
Time: Wednesday’s, 7pm - 8pm
Start Date: September 19, 2007
End Date: the study will run for 11 weeks

Our first week together we will have an opportunity to meet one another and I will give out copies of the study and go over it with you. If you could, please email Tobey if you think you will be participating.  tobeyb (at) zionpca [dot] com.

Congregational Vote September 23

After evaluating a number of rebuild/purchase options, the Zion Session is recommending congregational approval of a proposal to purchase the old Southwood Lutheran facility at 5511 South 27th.  A congregational meeting for questions, discussion and vote is called for 5:00 p.m. Sunday September 23rd in the worship hall at 5511 South 27th.  Come at 5:00 to tour the building and the congregational meeting will follow.

A Flicker Set has a few photos ...

Zion’s move to the 5511 property is just one part of our strategy.  Another part is for our Associate Pastor Tobey Brockman to lead a church planting effort at 9th and D.  The Session has endorsed Youth Pastor Adam ODell to team with Tobey as his Assistant.  All who are interested in learning more about the church plant, email Tobey (tobeyb [at] zionpca [dot] com) or call him at the church office 476-2524.

FoodNet Time Change

Starting July 21st, FoodNet will begin at 10:30am (instead of 11:30am) in Cooper Park. We will ask our volunteers to come at 9:30am to help with the sorting of food. (We hope that this time change will work better since we have no refrigeration and we want to distribute the perishable foods faster, especially during the summer months.) Our volunteer schedule is the same as before, with AFC1 doing the 1st Saturday of each month, AFC2 doing the 2nd, etc.
