Arts Committee

The Zion Arts Committee schedules and coordinates events for artists and audiences in the fine arts. Our goal is to give Zion members and the surrounding community resources and opportunities to produce and enjoy the artistic and creative dimension God gave us as his image-bearers.

Denis and Margie Haack Weekend, October 22-24, 2010

Denis and Margie Haack created Ransom Fellowship in 1981 as a ministry that includes lecturing, writing, teaching, feeding, and encouraging those who want to know more about what it means to be a Christian in the everyday life of the 21st century. Zion members have especially enjoyed the seminar sessions the Haacks have led at the annual L’abri conference in Rochester Minnesota.

Rochester L’Abri Conference, February 11-12 2011

Each February Zion members and friends arrange to travel together to attend the L’Abri Conference in Rochester, Minnesota.

L’Abri is the French word for shelter. The L’Abri ministry was founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer in 1955 to provide an environment where Christians and non-Christians could seek answers to questions about God and truth. Following in that tradition, a L’Abri Conference is an opportunity through lectures, discussions, and personal interaction, to feed and hone the mind in an effort to deepen one’s understanding of what it means to be a Christian in our society.

God in the Gallery, October 18, 2008.

We welcomed Dan Siedell to the Zion Coffee House for a book talk: God in the Gallery: A Christian Embrace of Modern Art. Dan is the son of Barry and Linda Siedell (and brother of Angie), a professor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and past curator of Sheldon Art Gallery. Dan gave an overview of the topics he addressed in his book and gave some recommendations for the way Christians can engage modern art, both as individuals, and corporately in the church.

Creation Brass Quintet, May 1, 2009

The Arts Committee hosted a performance and reception for a new composition for Brass Quintet by Marty Bolt, a Zion regular who is pursuing a master’s degree in composition at the University of Nebraska. His new work, which is part of his degree requirement, is based on the first four verses of Genesis chapter 1. Marty described the elements of his work and answered questions about the composition process.

Indelible Grace, November 20, 2009.

“Indelible Grace Music grew out of ministering to college students, primarily through Reformed University Fellowship (RUF). We saw many touched by the gospel, and gripped by the rich theology and great poetry of the hymns of the Church. As these students began to taste more of the depth of the gospel and the richness of the hymn tradition, many began to join the music of their culture with the words of our forefathers (and mothers!), and a movement was born.”

Zion hosted a concert by Indelible Grace in the worship hall on November 20.
