Zion Church recovers cornerstone and time-capsule
The salvage of Zion’s facility included some stained glass, some pews, the cornerstone, coffee house furniture, and a time-capsule buried with the cornerstone. The time-capsule will be opened at a service in the near future.
The demolition of the Zion facility at 9th and D Streets began around 2:30 PM Friday and will continue for approximately 3 days. The clean up and removal will take about another 7 days. At least one dump-truck load of brick will be placed in the Zion parking lot, just north of the former facility. Some bricks may be available as mementos.
Zion was in the process of partnering with the South Bottoms Neighborhood Association to put a new playground in Cooper Park. We understand that the city is willing to push that project up on their list so it might be completed before the end of summer. The $60,000 project is being funded by Verizon Wireless and the Neighborhood Association (half) and Zion Church (half).
